"Come, Let Us Destroy Them as a Nation"

There have been several occasions in the last century when Israel's neighbours have come close to fulfilling this prophecy in Psalm 83.

But when has it ever seemed quite so relevant?

"O God, do not keep silent; be not quiet, O God, be not still. See how your enemies are astir, how your foes rear their heads. With cunning they conspire against your people; they plot against those you cherish. "Come," they say, "let us destroy them as a nation, that the name of Israel be remembered no more." With one mind they plot together; they form an alliance against you - the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, of Moab and the Hagrites, Gebal, Ammon and Amalek, Philistia, with the people of Tyre. Even Assyria has joined them to lend strength to the descendants of Lot."

Here, as in Joel 3, the names of Philistia and Tyre are specifically mentioned, corresponding geographically to the Gaza Strip and South Lebanon.

The interesting feature is the mention of the support being given by 'Assyria'. The actual territory of Assyria is roughly today's Kurdistan - that is parts of Iraq, Iran and Turkey. The Psalm being written presumably before the later development of the Persian empire (Iran), could this then be a reference to the role of Iran in this conflict?

PS: For those who are interested in following events in the Middle East, the Jerusalem Post and DEBKA websites give a lot of detailed stories often not found on mainstream news sites.

Joel 3 - And they say the Bible isn't relevant for today!

Joel 3 is one of the classic Bible prophecies about the future of our world - if you have a Bible close by take a look at this...

Here we are talking about the gathering of all nations v2. To the 'Valley of Jehoshaphat', but more well-known is 'to Armageddon' in Rev 16:16

As with most of these passages it is Israel that is in focus. v2 says that God is going to judge the nations for what they did to Israel - "for they scattered my people among the nations and divided up my land". When did they do that then? Or ....

We go on... v6 "you sold the people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks that you might send them far from their homeland". Ringing any bells with you? What is this deal that is done? Is this link relevant?

Wait.. what is that in v4 "What have you against me Tyre and Sidon (Southern Lebanon) and all you regions of Philistia (The Gaza Strip)?" The exact places that are right now making the headlines in Israel and around the world.

This was written thousands of years ago...

And they say the Bible isn't relevant for today!
